For the food memoir I intend to focus upon my first school immunization. This particular memory carries significant weight even today not just for the food, but the experience as a whole. Reasons why include but are not limited to the following:
- New experience. Obviously entering school is a huge and jarring change in any child’s life.
- My childish natural fear of doctors was exacerbated to disdain and lasting mistrust of the medical profession due to my treatment. Rather than be up front with what was about to happen, the physician’s assistant literally snuck behind me and jabbed the needle in. To this day I will not allow anyone in a medical field near me without explicitly explaining every move.
- Taste: I was bribed into going not with the usual child’s fodder of sweets, but with a chicken dinner from Druther’s afterward. It was utterly delectable.
- Comfort: It is amazing how something as base as a favorite meal eases the trauma of any bad experience.
I would also like to reflect upon my recent quest to locate and experience the Druther’s again after ~20 years, only to be pleased, yet still disappointed. The nostalgia filter is a tantalizing thing at times, but never the less I still enjoyed the trip and will likely do so again. That excursion is documented here and I will likely use excerpts or examples from it.
